The Spitting Image: How We Found a Girl Who Changed Our Family Forever

MY WIFE AND I WENT TO AN ORPHANAGE TO ADOPT A CHILD AND FOUND A GIRL WHO WAS A CARBON COPY OF MY DAUGHTER

My wife and I have been dreaming about adding another child to our family. Unfortunately, my wife can’t have children, so it’s just the three of us—her, me, and my amazing five-year-old daughter from my previous marriage, whom we both adore.

After months of conversations and soul-searching, we decided to take the leap and adopt.

That day, we arrived at the children’s shelter and spent about an hour in an interview with the director. Then she took us to the playroom where the kids were.

We spent time playing and talking with many of them. Honestly, they were all incredible. If we could, we would’ve opened our home to every single one of them. But we agreed we wanted to adopt a child we felt an undeniable connection with.

While we were helping a group of kids with a puzzle, I suddenly felt a small tap on my back. I turned around, and a little girl said, “ARE YOU MY NEW DAD? I JUST FEEL LIKE YOU ARE.”

I froze.

My wife looked like she might faint.

The girl standing in front of me was the spitting image of my daughter, who was at home with her nanny.

She held out her tiny hand, and that’s when I saw it—a birthmark identical to my daughter’s, right on her wrist.

“What’s your name?” I managed to ask, my voice barely a whisper.

“Lila,” she said, smiling shyly.

The resemblance was uncanny—not just the look but her mannerisms, the way she tilted her head, and her soft voice.

My wife and I exchanged a look full of shock and curiosity.

We asked the director for Lila’s background. She told us that Lila was found at a hospital shortly after birth, with no known family.

My mind raced.

How was this possible? Was it just a strange coincidence? Or was there something more?

We took some photos and promised to think everything through carefully.

Driving home that day, my wife squeezed my hand and said, “Maybe fate brought her to us.”

When we got home, our daughter ran to us, giggling.

The moment Lila arrived at our door the next week for a visit, the two girls stared at each other in silence—like looking in a mirror.

Could it be possible that they were connected in some way beyond what we understood?

We decided to start the adoption process for Lila, but also to investigate her origins. What we found in the months ahead would change our lives forever…
