Sweet Onion Casserole

Sweet Onion Casserole – Melty, Cheesy, and Perfectly Golden!

This comforting dish brings out the best of sweet onions—caramelized, buttery, and smothered in a rich, cheesy cream sauce. It’s the kind of old-fashioned recipe you’ll find on grandma’s Sunday table, always baked to perfection and gone in minutes.

I remember my aunt bringing this to every holiday potluck. The first bite was always magic—velvety onions under that crispy, golden topping. It’s now one of my favorite make-ahead casseroles for family dinners and cozy evenings.

Ingredients:

  1. 4 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
  2. 2 tbsp butter
  3. 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  4. 1 cup crushed buttery crackers (like Ritz)
  5. ½ cup sour cream
  6. ½ cup mayonnaise
  7. ½ tsp garlic powder
  8. ½ tsp salt
  9. ¼ tsp black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a medium baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter and sauté onions over medium heat until soft and lightly caramelized (about 12–15 minutes).
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and half of the cheese. Stir in cooked onions.
  4. Spread the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with remaining cheese and crushed crackers.
  5. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until bubbly and golden on top.
  6. Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.
