Crusty sore on my lip won’t go away. Appointment is impossible to get right now. What is this?
A sore on your lip that won’t heal can be uncomfortable and worrying. While I can’t diagnose you, I can share some helpful information about what might be going on and what you can do in the meantime until you’re able to see a doctor.
Common causes of a crusty lip sore
- Cold sores (Herpes simplex virus): Often start as tingling or burning, then form blisters that crust over. They can recur.
- Canker sores: Usually inside the mouth but sometimes near the lips. Painful but not contagious.
- Angular cheilitis: Cracks and sores at the corners of the mouth, often caused by yeast, bacteria, or irritation.
- Injury/irritation: Biting your lip, sunburn, or even harsh toothpaste/lip balm can cause a sore that doesn’t heal quickly.
- More serious issues: A sore that lingers beyond 2–3 weeks without healing could sometimes be linked to skin conditions, infections, or rarely, oral cancer — which is why a medical evaluation is important if it continues.
What you can do at home
- Keep it clean and dry: Gently wash with mild soap and water.
- Moisturize: Use plain petroleum jelly to prevent cracking.
- Avoid irritants: Spicy, acidic foods and alcohol-based mouthwash can make it worse.
- Cold compress: Helps reduce pain and inflammation.
- Over-the-counter creams: If it seems like a cold sore, antiviral creams (like docosanol/Abreva) may shorten healing.
When to seek urgent help 🚨
Even if appointments are hard to get, try to seek care quickly if you notice:
- The sore has lasted more than 2–3 weeks.
- It’s getting larger, more painful, or spreading.
- You have swelling, pus, or fever.
- The sore is hard, bleeding, or irregular in shape (needs medical evaluation).
👉 Since your sore isn’t going away, I’d recommend at least trying a telehealth/virtual consultation if you can’t get an in-person appointment soon. Pharmacists may also suggest helpful over-the-counter remedies.
