I CAUGHT MY KIDS’ BABYSITTER COMING OUT OF THE SHOWER WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS HOME, SO I TURNED ON THE NANNY CAM THE NEXT DAY.
We hired a babysitter six months ago—Rachel, a sweet, college-aged girl studying early childhood development. She came highly recommended, and honestly, she was great with our two kids. Polite, on time, kept the house tidy, and the kids loved her. But something happened this week that flipped my world upside down.
It was Tuesday. I came home from work earlier than usual—around 6 p.m. I walked in, expecting the usual chaos: my youngest running around with mismatched socks, my older one glued to his tablet, Rachel curled up on the couch.
But instead, I saw Rachel step out of the hallway with wet hair, holding a towel in one hand, her cheeks flushed like she’d just stepped out of the shower.
“Hey,” I said, trying to stay calm. “Did you… shower here?”
She looked a bit embarrassed. “Yeah, sorry. Your daughter spilled a whole cup of milk on me. I didn’t want to stay sticky and sour all evening.”
Okay. Odd, but plausible.
Then I heard something that made my heart drop: the sound of a cupboard closing. From the kitchen. I looked over and saw my husband.
He was supposed to be at work.
“Oh! Hey babe,” he said casually, like this was totally normal. “I forgot some documents. Figured I’d grab them and eat real quick.”
The energy in the room shifted. I couldn’t explain it. It wasn’t what he said—it was how both of them acted. A little too careful. Too quiet. Rachel left shortly after, and the moment the door closed, I turned to my husband.
“You didn’t tell me you were coming home.”
“I didn’t think it mattered.”
“And you were here while she was showering?”
He gave me this look, half offended, half tired. “Are you serious? You really think something’s going on?”
“I don’t know what I think,” I said. “But something doesn’t feel right.”
That night, I lay in bed staring at the ceiling. Maybe I was overthinking. Maybe I’d seen too many TikToks about cheating nannies. But the gut feeling wouldn’t leave.
So I did something I never thought I’d do. I dug out the old nanny cam from when my youngest was a baby. Tiny little thing disguised as a charging block. I plugged it into the outlet in the living room where it had a clear view of the couch, hallway, and part of the kitchen. I synced it to my phone, kissed the kids goodbye, and went to work.
I told myself I wouldn’t check unless something felt off. But not even an hour after I left, my phone buzzed. Motion detected.
Out of curiosity, I opened the feed.
And there he was. My husband. Walking through the front door.
He was supposed to be at work.
My heart was pounding.
He took off his shoes, walked straight to the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and then… he just sat down.
I waited, holding my breath.
A few minutes later, Rachel arrived. She greeted him politely, just like always.
He handed her the glass of water and said, “Okay. Let’s try again.”
What?
She nodded, pulled out a clipboard, and sat across from him.
I watched, completely confused, as she started pointing to some printouts. My husband was nodding, scribbling notes, asking questions.
Then it hit me.
I paused the feed and zoomed in.
They were worksheets. Job interview prep.
Later that evening, after the kids were asleep, I told him what I did.
He blinked at me. “You set up a nanny cam?”
“I had to. I walked in on you two the other day—you were home while she was in the shower. I panicked.”
He laughed. “Oh God. No wonder you’ve been acting weird.”
“Why were you even here again?” I asked. “Be honest.”
He looked a little sheepish. “I’ve been applying for new jobs. I didn’t want to tell you until something was solid.”
“And Rachel?”
“She’s helping me prep. Her minor’s in psychology, and she’s insanely good at behavioral interview coaching. I offered to pay her, but she wouldn’t take anything.”
I didn’t know what to say. A part of me felt embarrassed. But I also felt… relieved.
Then I asked, “And the shower?”
“Oh,” he chuckled. “Yeah. Our daughter spilled a full bottle of milk on her. Like, splat, all over her blouse. I told her she could use the guest shower.”
We sat there in silence for a bit, the nanny cam footage playing in my mind.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “I jumped to conclusions.”
He smiled. “I get it. If I walked in on a shirtless guy in the kitchen while you were showering, I’d lose my mind too.”
I laughed, finally letting my shoulders relax.
The next day, I told Rachel what happened. She turned bright red but laughed it off. “Honestly, I’d think the same thing if I were you.”
Now we joke about it. The kids have no idea any of this happened. And the best part?
My husband just got a new job offer last week.
So yeah—sometimes your gut tells you something is wrong. And sometimes, it’s just your brain catching up to something good you didn’t expect.
But I still keep the nanny cam plugged in.
Just in case. 😉
