Ingredients

  1. 1 lb ground beef
  2. 1/2 lb ground sausage (optional but amazing)
  3. 1 small onion, diced
  4. 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
  5. 1/2 cup ketchup
  6. 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (smoky or spicy)
  7. 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  8. 1 tbsp brown sugar
  9. 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  10. 1/4 tsp chili powder
  11. Salt & pepper to taste
  12. Brioche buns or Texas toast, for serving
  13. Optional: pickled jalapeños, shredded cheddar cheese, or coleslaw for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown ground beef and sausage (if using) over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain excess grease.
  2. Add onion and bell pepper, cook until soft (about 5 minutes).
  3. Stir in ketchup, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire, brown sugar, paprika, and chili powder.
  4. Simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes until thickened. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  5. Toast buns or Texas toast, pile high with the sloppy joe mixture, and top with jalapeños, cheese, or slaw if desired.

Pro Tips

  • For extra kick, use spicy BBQ sauce or toss in crushed red pepper.
  • Leftovers make killer nachos or stuffed baked potatoes.
  • Want a smokier twist? Add a splash of liquid smoke while simmering.
