Family Beach Day Turns Tragic in Florida

A peaceful family vacation in Florida took a heartbreaking turn for a family visiting from Indiana. Siblings Sloan and Maddox Mattingly, ages 7 and 9, were enjoying a sunny afternoon at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea when the sand around them suddenly collapsed.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene after witnesses reported frantic cries for help. First responders worked tirelessly to free the children using shovels and boards to stabilize the shifting sand. Both were quickly taken to a nearby hospital for urgent care.
Sadly, young Sloan did not make it, while her brother Maddox continues to fight for recovery under close medical supervision.
The family had traveled from Fort Wayne, Indiana, to escape the winter cold and enjoy some sunshine together. What was meant to be a joyful vacation has now left the community mourning and rallying around the Mattingly family in prayer and support.
Local officials are reminding beachgoers to use caution when digging large sand holes, as unstable sand can become dangerous without warning.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the Mattingly family during this unimaginable time. 💔
